π¨ Shocking New Findings on Alcohol in the Workplace:
A recent survey found that:
85% of 2,600 UK workers surveyed admitted to being drunk in the workplace in the past year.
31% said they were drunk or impaired by alcohol at least once a week.
With 31,767,000 workers in the UK, this could mean over 9.8 million people are potentially impaired at work each week.
That’s 1 in 4 businesses affected by alcohol-related impairment every week.
Alcohol misuse costs the UK economy approximately Β£7.3 billion a year in lost productivity.
17 million working days are lost annually to alcohol-related sickness.
And 200,000 employees are estimated to turn up to work hungover every day.
π¬ Matthew Chilcott, FCIPD β Owner of Consensus HR, comments:
βThese statistics are alarming and show just how significant alcohol dependency can be in the workplace. Itβs crucial that businesses have clear drug and alcohol policies, provide appropriate support mechanisms, and ensure their teams are trained to spot the signs of misuse early. At Consensus HR, we work with businesses to implement policies that are both legally compliant and practically effective in maintaining a healthy, productive workforce.β
