🐱 Celebrating International Cat Day – 8 August
Each year on 8 August, the world celebrates International Cat Day—a special day established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to raise awareness about cat welfare. Since 2020, the event has been led by the UK charity International Cat Care, promoting feline wellbeing on a global scale.
🐾 Why Do We Celebrate?
-
Cats have been domesticated for nearly 9,500 years, with early remains discovered in Cyprus.
-
In Ancient Egypt, cats were sacred animals representing protection and were worshipped through the goddess Bastet.
-
Across cultures and history, cats have symbolised mystery, magic, and loyalty.
Cats are more than just companions—they are trusted friends and therapeutic presences in homes, workplaces, and communities.
🏠 Ways to Celebrate International Cat Day:
🎁 Treat Your Cat – Give your cat a new toy, some extra treats, or some cuddle time.
📸 Share a Photo – Post your favourite picture using hashtags like #InternationalCatDay and tag @icatcare.
🐾 Adopt or Foster – Consider giving a home to a cat in need through a reputable rescue centre.
🎗️ Donate or Volunteer – Support your local animal shelter with time, money, or supplies.
👩⚕️ Prioritise Health – Use this day to book or remind yourself of your cat’s next vet visit.
📣 Comment from Matthew Chilcott – Owner, Consensus HR
“International Cat Day is a wonderful reminder of the positive impact cats have on our lives—offering companionship, calmness, and a little bit of mystery. Whether you’re a cat owner or simply an animal lover, this day is a great opportunity to raise awareness of feline welfare and the small things we can all do to help. I have been fortunate to have many cat from pedigree Siamese to beautiful Moggies and remember each of them well, from Humphrey, Lonnie, whoopsy, to many more”
