Did You Know? Employers Must Keep Records of Working Time and Rest Breaks
Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, all UK employers must maintain accurate records of employees’ working hours and rest breaks — even for salaried staff.
These records prove compliance with legal limits, including:
48-hour average weekly limit (unless the employee opts out)
11 consecutive hours of daily rest
24 hours uninterrupted rest per week
Failure to keep proper records can result in penalties or enforcement action by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
✅ Using a system like Breathe HR, offered through Consensus HR, ensures accurate tracking of working hours, holidays, and compliance with UK law.
Comment from Matthew Chilcott – Owner:
“Keeping working time records isn’t just a legal formality — it’s vital for managing productivity, wellbeing, and compliance. With tools like Breathe HR, it becomes seamless.”
